Dries Mertens is now a free agent after his contract expired with Napoli and his entourage are currently in the south of France to discuss a possible move with Olympique Marseille.

The 35-year-old Belgian forward had been hoping to stay with the Partenopei but a convincing contract never arrived due to president Aurelio De Laurentiis’ desire to cut the wage bill significantly, forcing him to leave at the start of this month. After nine years in Campania, now it seems like its time for Mertens to find a new home.

As reported by French outlet Footmercato, Mertens’ entourage are currently in Marseille to discuss a possible free transfer to Les Olympiens. President Pablo Longoria is a big fan of the Belgian striker, who is asking for a contract worth €2.5m net per season.

Talks are currently ongoing and he’s also been linked with moves to Lazio and Royal Antwerp in recent weeks.
