Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret is taking longer than expected to recover from injury and there are still major question marks over his contract extension.

The shot-stopper limped off during the 0-0 draw with Juventus on September 21 and was diagnosed with a Grade 2 adductor longus strain in his left thigh.

It was believed that he would be out of action for circa a month, but the situation seems to be more serious than at first thought.

Latest Meret tests are not reassuring

According to Calciomercato.com, Meret is still not back in training and new tests showed the muscle has not healed as quickly as they would’ve hoped.

He is therefore likely to miss out on the next Serie A games against Empoli and Lecce too, leaving the gloves to Elia Caprile.

Meanwhile, the same source also notes that negotiations to extend his contract have hit problems and time is running out.

Both the club and goalkeeper are eager to stick together, but his deal only lasts until June 2025 and he will soon be able to negotiate with other clubs.

The 27-year-old was a big investment at €26m when making the transfer from Udinese in 2019, following an initial loan spell.
