Meret: ‘Italy U21s want to win’

Alex Meret insists “this season was a positive one” for Napoli and “Italy’s goal is to win” the European Under-21 Championship.

The goalkeeper arrived from Udinese in the summer and along with Spanish midfielder Fabian Ruiz, were the only major changes to what was still effectively Maurizio Sarri’s team.

“Coach Carlo Ancelotti taught us a lot, he gave the team a different identity after the previous cycle had ended,” Meret told Sky Sport Italia.

“Coach Carlo Ancelotti taught us a lot, he gave the team a different identity after the previous cycle had ended,” Meret told Sky Sport Italia.

“We are growing and if we have another year learning from his experience and following his advice, we will be able to fight for the championship. However, this has still been a positive season.”

The 22-year-old was named in the provisional Italian U-21 squad today for the European Championship that will be held in Italy and San Marino next month.

“Our goal is to win the tournament, playing in front of our own fans will be important and it will give us the motivation to do well.

“We do have a difficult group, with Spain being very strong, but the other groups have no shortage of good teams. To reach the final, we will have to give our best.”

The Azzurrini kick off their tournament against Spain on June 16 at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara.
