Alex Meret’s agent confirms the goalkeeper’s contract will automatically extend, but they will need to ‘understand if there is the possibility to agree a new’ deal or not.

The shot-stopper’s current contract only runs to June 2024, but his representative is not concerned.

“There is an option to renew automatically if he makes 70 per cent of the appearances in a season and it will be activated by the club,” Federico Pastorello told Tuttomercatoweb.

“However, it is only valid for one year, so that is why we are already talking to the club about a new contract. Alex is happy there, he wants to give real focus to evaluating the possibility of staying.

“We will soon meet to understand if there is the possibility to agree a new deal or not. If that should not be a possibility, but I don’t think that will be the case, then we will evaluate other options because I don’t think Napoli can contemplate another Piotr Zielinski situation.”

That suggests Napoli will sell Meret in the summer if he cannot agree a new contract, because his contract would then be running down in June 2025.

The shot-stopper turns 27 on Friday and was purchased from Udinese in 2018 for €26m following an initial loan.
