Prospective FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio reportedly wants an experienced Coach to replace Cesare Prandelli, to then act as a mentor to a ‘fresh’ face.

Before a set meeting today, the FIGC are due to meet with the Presidents of the various components of Italian football, to try to decide on who will replace Cesare Prandelli, after he resigned following Italy’s group stage exit at the 2014 World Cup.

However, on from reports that National Amateur League chief Tavecchio will lead calls to delay the decision until a new FIGC President is in place, come suggestions on who he would plan to bring in.

Tavecchio is seen as the leading candidate to replace Giancarlo Abete and is understood to be favouring an approach whereby a more senior Coach is initially handed the Italy job, whilst acting as a ‘mentor’ to an eventual replacement.

Alberto Zaccheroni and Francesco Guidolin are listed in reports today as prime choices to take up the ‘mentor’ role, with Antonio Cabrini and Paolo Maldini suggested as the ‘fresh’ faces to come in as long-term replacements.

However, Massimiliano Allegri and Roberto Mancini are seen as contenders to lead other parties’ preference for a ‘strong’ name to be hired to the Italy bench.

Il Tempo suggest Allegri has already had early conversations with representatives from the FIGC over potentially taking the position, whilst Mancini’s biggest obstacle is believed to be Lazio President Claudio Lotito, who in possibly taking up the FIGC’s vice-presidency, is still seen as on bad terms with his former tactician.

Meanwhile, Maldini is reported by the Gazzetta dello Sport as set for a return to football with the FIGC in some capacity this summer, even if not in this particular role.

It is reported that the former Milan ace is in line to take up Demetrio Albertini’s role as head of the delegation of the national team.
