Federico Melchiorri had “the greatest afternoon of my career” as Cagliari earned a shock 2-1 victory over Inter at San Siro.

The striker has had a rough career, undergoing brain surgery six years ago for a cavernoma – irregular cluster of blood vessels – and rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in April.

“It was fundamental we get at least a point here, but we got all three and frankly it could not have gone any better,” Melchiorri told Mediaset Premium.

“Being here and scoring is a unique feeling, it is certainly the greatest afternoon of my career. The moment has come for me to experience these satisfactions and I am going to enjoy them to the full.

“Our objective was to start getting results on our travels too and we’ve got the right mentality now. In the second half we were set out better and Inter’s fatigue allowed us to make more of the spaces.”
