The 20 medics representing Serie A clubs insist they are not against resuming the season, but wished to make helpful points on the testing protocol to clarify the situation.

A report in the Corriere della Sera and La Repubblica newspapers said that only three sides – Juventus, Lazio and Genoa – did not have any problems with the protocol presented for training and playing during a coronavirus pandemic.

The other 17 clubs and their medical staff presented 20 points to be considered around logistics and practicality.

Now a joint letter has been sent to news agency Ansa explaining the position of all the Serie A clubs and their chief doctors.

“Over the last few days, the medical staff of the Serie A clubs received the protocol of organisation and screening proposed by the FIGC medical and scientific commission.

“The medics, with a proactive spirit, elaborated on it and put forward observations, hoping to combine safety with applicability, sending these to the Commission and the Lega Serie A.

“The medics are now eager to clarify that these documents are solely and exclusively aimed at ensuring the safety of the players and hope they will be used only for that end.

“In essence, none of us are contrary to completing the season and there is no attempt to block it. We are all eager for the tournament to reach a natural conclusion.

“The problem is when, because it has to be done safely. We are convinced that there is a reasonable chance of achieving that, and the issue therefore is time.”

The Italian Government is expected to ease lockdown measures from May 4, which should mean the start of training for individuals or very small groups.

Sky Sport Italia suggest the training date will be pushed back to May 18, which would mean games resuming in early to mid-June.
