Mediapro, the Spanish company that bought the television rights to Serie A, have refused to provide financial guarantees in a row with Sky Italia.
The deadline is this evening for the presentation of financial guarantees amounting to €1.2bn, but Mediapro released a statement warning they won’t provide these bonds.
This is because the assignation of the rights has been put on ice until May 4 due to legal action by Sky Italia.

“The legal situation created by Sky to defend their privileged position in the Italian market prevents the Lega Serie A from guaranteeing to Mediapro the full and unfettered control of the audio-visual rights bought in the package.
“Mediapro will prove the financial guarantees to the Lega when it can be guaranteed these rights.
“In case the Lega Serie A decided to create, along with Mediapro, a challenge for the distribution of the rights to the Italian top flight, then Mediapro would present the financial guarantees immediately, because the rights would no longer be subject to any legal action.”
