Napoli fell in a shock 1-0 loss to Spezia at home last night, with the Italian press noting the poor performances of Luciano Spalletti and Juan Jesus.

The Partenopei were clearly in control of the match at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona last night but conceded in the 37th minute, after Juan Jesus accidentally put the ball into the back of his own net.

Despite Napoli’s best attempts – 26 shots, seven of which were on target – Spalletti’s side couldn’t salvage any points, leaving them embarrassed after the final whistle blew. The Italian press highlighted the poor work of both the Italian coach and the Brazilian defender, noting the insufficient game plan and lack of focus.

Napoli now go into the Christmas break in third place, three points behind second place Milan and seven points behind league leaders Inter. Their first game of the new year will be tough, away to Massimiliano Allegri’s Juventus on January 6.

Spalletti’s ratings in the Italian newspapers:

La Gazzetta dello Sport: 5.5

Tuttosport: 5

Corriere dello Sport: 5

Juan Jesus’ ratings in the Italian newspapers:

  1. For this Napoli fan, it was a dreadful game to watch. It literally felt cursed, as for Napoli the ball did everything except go into the net. A sad way to end the year, but now the team and staff have two weeks or se to get over it and get ready for Juventus.

As for all the talk of a two-way Scudetto race between Inter and AC Milan, all I can say is it’s a long season and I think such talk is premature at best.

Forza Napoli, but for now, Buon Natale to us all, and God bless us, every one.
