Juventus star Weston McKennie reveals the ‘privilege’ of watching Cristiano Ronaldo in training, but also that he’d ‘never even heard of the Champions League’ as a kid.

The American midfielder made the move from Schalke 04, initially on loan and then permanently.

“It didn’t seem super-realistic,” McKennie told the New York Times. “So I kind of brushed it off.”

When Juve approached again, he told his agent “we have to make it happen.”

“It didn’t seem super-realistic,” McKennie told the New York Times. “So I kind of brushed it off.”

When Juve approached again, he told his agent “we have to make it happen.”

Now McKennie is a fan favourite and already did enough to prompt the club into activating his purchase clause.

He could take to the field this evening in the Champions League Round of 16 against FC Porto, even though he doesn’t consider it exactly a childhood dream.

“(Some of my teammates) can’t believe how far they’ve come, that they’re playing in the Champions League. And I think that, when I was a kid, I had never even heard of the Champions League.”

Yet there are also some moments that stand out for the young man from America.

“I was sitting with Alvaro Morata after training the other day,” he said. “We were just watching Cristiano practicing his free kicks. And we turned to each other and said what a privilege it is, just to be able to do that: to watch him take free kick after free kick.”
