Walter Mazzarri has been officially dismissed by Cagliari, further damaging his CV following the heights of his career with Napoli.

The 60-year-old Italian coach took over as Rossoblu coach back in September 2021 and he oversaw 32 Serie A matches before being dismissed, averaging 0.84 points per game. The team are now stuck in the bogs of a relegation battle and risk slipping into the bottom three as the Serie A season draws to a close.

Mazzarri’s Cagliari sacking is a sad end to a fairly miserable time in Sardinia. It’s incredible to remember, then, that he was the third favourite to take over the Liverpool job at the time that Jurgen Klopp was appointed in 2015. The Italian coach had 8/1 odds, just behind Carlo Ancelotti’s 5/1 and Klopp’s 4/7.

In 2015, Mazzarri had just come off a rough year with Inter, but his stock hadn’t fallen much since his fairly positive four-year spell with Napoli. In Naples, he picked up a Coppa Italia title and guided the team to second in the 2012-13 season, showing potential as a coach and tactician.

Following the poor year with Inter, Mazzarri spent less than a year in charge of Watford, only managing to win 29.27% of his 41 matches. This was another blow for the Italian coach but he still showed some decent ideas, leading Torino to take a punt on him in January 2018.

Whilst his 25 months in Turin were decent, Mazzarri failed to live up to the potential he once showed in the dugout, and the Granata never really looked to be building a decent project, despite waiting two years. This recent spell in Cagliari has only further damaged his stock, and now it’s up to him to prove his doubters wrong.

  1. His Napoli were a decent team and exciting to watch. Amazing that he was mentioned in the same breath as Klopp. Look what Klopp has achieved at Liverpool.
