According to Sportitalia, a clause included in Walter Mazzarri’s contract allows him to extend with Cagliari until 2024 despite being sacked.

The primary Italian media report Cagliari have decided to sack the Tuscan tactician with only three games remaining. Cagliari are outside the relegation zone, with a three-point lead over Salernitana, who have a game in hand.

Cagliari have yet to confirm Mazzarri’s sacking and Primavera coach Alessandro Agostini is reported to be the only possible candidate to take over at this stage of the season. Cagliari announced Mazzarri had signed a contract until 2024 in September, but according to Sportitalia, the third season at the club was subject to a clause.

The same clause reportedly allows Mazzarri to extend with the Rossoblu until June 2024 if he is sacked while the team is outside the relegation zone.

The Sardinians will meet Salernitana, Inter and Venezia in the last three games of the season. They have collected six victories this season, all under Mazzarri.

  1. Italian sides often have multiple managers on their payroll at the same time. That’s why they often rehire the same coaches over and over again.

Ridiculous, but typical of Serie A.

  2. Ferban, I think you’ll find that Chelsea had 3 managers on the payroll at one point. It’s what happens when you have impatient/clueless presidents.

  3. @Ferban and Fatecisognare, this is a European thing, not a Serie A thing. European labor laws don’t permit “at will” employment, as U.S. laws do. Therefore, people are still getting paid when they’re fired (if they can even be fired) unless there is an agreement to mutually terminate.
