Walter Mazzarri confirms Victor Osimhen and Kvicha Kvaratskhelia really needed those goals against Cagliari, as the strikers were getting ‘irritable,’ while Mario Rui is essential for Napoli.

It was a much-needed victory days after securing their place in the Champions League Round of 16, as they had lost two Serie A games in a row.

“This was a very important win, we needed to get back on track, because we are Napoli. It would’ve started an ugly situation if we hadn’t won today, as the belief of the squad could’ve been put to the test,” Mazzarri told DAZN.

This was again very tough going, as Leonardo Pavoletti equalised moments after the Victor Osimhen opener.

Osimhen proved crucial by drawing away six Cagliari players and managing to pull back from the by-line for Kvicha Kvaratskhelia to score at the far post.

It was notable that Napoli really went into a different gear once Mario Rui made his comeback from injury, having used Natan as a makeshift left-back.

“When you play with this tactical system, you need full-backs who can swap over and combine with the wide attackers. Kvara struggled in particular, as it meant he was forced to use up more energy than usual. This is why Mario Rui was fundamental.”

Is that the only reason why Kvaratskhelia has been a shadow of his former self this season?

“If there was a change of coach, it is because there were problems. We have to support these lads. Don’t forget last season Kvara suddenly had everyone’s eyes on him, so it’s natural he would feel the pressure. My collaborators and I tried to help him relax more. He already seemed more relaxed today and in fact scored a great goal. I am sure he will give more to this team.”

Osimhen had also struggled with injuries and poor form, but was absolutely decisive this evening.

“I am glad that he and Kvara scored, because they were both looking a bit irritable. They needed to get back to being protagonists the way they were last season,” continued the coach.

“I can’t blame the team for getting tense, as it felt like in the first half the goal was cursed. When strikers are not relaxed, they can make really simple mistakes.”

Napoli are now awaiting Monday’s draw for the Champions League Round of 16 and are second seeds, so could have a very tough opponent. Who would Mazzarri like to avoid?

“I will be superstitious and not say anything, when the draw is made, then we can talk about it. We’re just glad to be there and can make a good impression.”
