The reaction to Napoli fans on the return of Walter Mazzarri after a decade-long absence has varied from relief that Rudi Garcia is gone to fury at President Aurelio De Laurentiis and the comeback of a viral meme.

The last time Mazzarri sat on the bench for the Partenopei was in May 2013 during a 2-1 defeat to Roma, which saw his tenure come to an end after almost four years.

Fans who went to bed last night knew De Laurentiis had met with Igor Tudor and was preparing to offer him the job, but woke up this morning to the return of Mazzarri, who has not had any coaching role for over a year.

Some were simply relieved to see the back of Garcia after a dismal start to the campaign, while others were furious at De Laurentiis for what feels like a huge step backwards just months after winning the Scudetto.

Inevitably the old memes returned along with Mazzarri.

They include a quite spectacular advert with women singing and dancing in Napoli jerseys about Mazzarri’s team during an electrical goods sale.

There was also an ad that Mazzarri and the Napoli squad themselves filmed to sell sparkling water, with Edinson Cavani and Marek Hamsik among those given lines to read.

Above all, Mazzarri is legendary for his touchline antics, which included angrily munching on a plastic bottle while at Inter.

Nothing beats the ultimate Mazzarri meme, and that is pointing to his watch to demand more injury time.

‘Mazzarri’s watch has stopped. Are Lavezzi and Cavani still here?’

Although special credit goes to the account that depicted Mazzarri as Thanos defeating Iron Man in Avengers.

‘You could not live with your own failure, and where did that bring you? Back to me.’
