Walter Mazzarri believes Cagliari were punished by Lazio for being ‘a little arrogant’ after recent good results. ‘We’ve got to get that humility back.’

The Sardinians had been unbeaten in five games, including victories away to Atalanta and Torino, having stalled the likes of Napoli and Fiorentina, but were swept aside 3-0 on home turf this evening.

The scoring was opened by a Ciro Immobile penalty, though Giorgio Altare argued he was trying to get his arm out of the way of Luis Alberto’s shot.

Luis Alberto then completed a classic counter-attack from Cagliari’s own corner, then Felipe Anderson went on a slalom through Sardinian defenders for 3-0.

“We were a little arrogant this evening and allowed a solid Lazio to punish us for that,” Mazzarri told DAZN.

“They quickly got the game on the track they wanted, so I introduced a third striker off the bench, but it was all over after the third goal.

“We weren’t as sharp on the ball, perhaps there was some arrogance and the recent results made us rest on our laurels a little bit. It’s good to be positive against any opponent, but you need balance too and the goals were basically all from us losing the ball as we played out from the back.

“Maybe we started to kid ourselves. We’ve got to get that humility back straight away and prepare for Spezia.”
