The Nerazzurri did rattle the crossbar with Mauro Icardi, who also forced a goalline clearance, but the finishing was not up to par.

“It seems paradoxical to say there are regrets with that result, because anyone who didn’t see the game would think Real Madrid dominated,” the Coach told journalists in St. Louis.

“Instead Inter created six or seven clear chances and I can’t believe none of them went in. We lacked sharpness, certainly, but I am very satisfied with my team’s performance.

“It was a definite step forward, as we created so much against such a strong side. Ricky Alvarez, Rodrigo Palacio and Icardi had many scoring opportunities and it seems impossible to me that we failed to score.

“If we had lost 3-2 to Real Madrid, who at the moment are one of the top teams in the world, then it wouldn’t have seemed so bad.

“The team is starting to understand certain tactical mechanisms and is solid. If we evaluate the performance and not just the result, then we can’t help but be happy.”

Mazzarri also commented on the news that defender Rolando has arrived on loan from Porto.

“Rolando is an experienced player and I need that after losing Cristian Chivu and Walter Samuel to injury in pre-season. With the three-man defence, we only had Marco Andreolli to spare. Rolando was very useful for me at Napoli last season to reach the Champions League.”
