Cagliari coach Walter Mazzarri uses Martin Caceres and Leonardo Pavoletti as examples for the required ‘spirit’ to turn things around in Sardinia.

The Rossoblu are still looking for their first win in Serie A 2021-22 and host newly promoted Empoli on Wednesday night.

Mazzarri, who replaced Leonardo Semplici at the helm and started with a 2-2 draw with Lazio last time, pointed at Caceres and Pavoletti after his first week in charge of the club.

“This is the spirit I want, Martin was magnificent,” Mazzarri said at a press conference. “He actively participated after being substituted. In addition, of course, having had a good match on the pitch, albeit conditioned by the yellow card.

“He was good, on and off the pitch. I told the lads: ‘You are 23 or 24 in a group; I want everyone to be the biggest fan of their teammates.

“If I notice someone being moody, who mumbles and is harmful to the group, I’m ready to leave them out of the squad.

“The more experienced must lead by example, as Pavoletti did.”
