Multiple sources are confident Walter Mazzarri has agreed a two-year contract with Cagliari after the club fired coach Leonardo Semplici this morning.

The decision was made to axe Semplici after the Sardinians started the campaign with one point from three Serie A rounds.

Sunday’s 3-2 home defeat to Genoa proved the final straw, as they had been 2-0 up before conceding three goals in under 20 minutes.

Mazzarri quickly emerged as the favourite and had a meeting with the Sardinians today, in which he was offered a two-year contract at €2m per season wages, including performance-related bonuses.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Sportitalia and more, Mazzarri has now accepted and signed the two-year deal.

It’ll be worth €1.8m per season net plus performance-related bonuses, taking it to €2m.

Mazzarri turns 60 next month and has been out of work since he was fired by Torino in February 2020.

Among his previous roles were Watford, Inter, Napoli, Sampdoria, Reggina and Livorno.
