Borja Mayoral shrugs off questions about his rivalry with Edin Dzeko after his two goals allowed Roma to beat Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Spaniard scored both goals in Kiev for a 2-1 win on the night, 5-1 on aggregate, sending the Giallorossi through to the Europa League quarter-finals.

“It was a very tough game for us, as we know Shakhtar play football really well, we suffered, but the most important thing was to get through to the next round,” Mayoral told Sky Sport Italia.

Is there a reason that Roma seem to play better in Europe than in Serie A?

“We know every game is different. Shakhtar want to keep the ball constantly and we had to defend, whereas in Italy we often have more possession. We must continue with this attitude.”

His goals are proving Paulo Fonseca right in picking the Spaniard ahead of Edin Dzeko.

“People always ask me the same question, but it’s the coach who decides. I work every day to play every game that I can. I scored two goals today and I’m happy with that, but I’ll keep working to the end.”
