Beppe Sala, the mayor of Milan, was open about his desire to ‘save San Siro’ as he remains in ‘constant contact’ with Inter and Milan.

The Rossoneri recently took a key step forward in their quest to leave San Siro and build a new stadium, officially purchasing land in the San Donato area of the city. The club are now working on the next bureaucratic steps as they push to complete the stadium by 2028.

Inter are still working on their new stadium project, having chosen a design by experts Populous, but they are also hoping to have their new home ready for the 2028-29 season, ready to leave the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

Speaking via Calciomercato.com, Sala discussed Milan’s land purchase in San Donato and his desire to keep the two clubs at San Siro for the future.

“I believe it is still a largely open game, in recent years we have seen everything. I understand that Milan have taken a step forward, but I repeat, I continue to be confident and maintain dialogue with the clubs.

“If I didn’t also see on their side, I’d look for other solutions for the San Siro, but in my opinion, they still have it. We’re in constant contact. Milan are certainly ahead, but we have already said this. But I believe the game is still open. I haven’t lost confidence in the possibility of saving San Siro.”

Both clubs are planning to build their own 70,000-seater stadiums, which’ll give them far greater sources of revenue compared to the current city owned Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
