Sassuolo starlet Maxime Lopez reveals that he turned down an offer from Liverpool in the past: ‘I was very young…’

The 24-year-old joined Sassuolo from Marseille in 2020 and has become one of the key players at the Mapei Stadium this term. He is a product of Marseille’s academy and he could have left South France earlier than moving to Sassuolo.

“I said no to Liverpool when I was 16 because I didn’t feel ready to leave at such a young age,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“A few years later, Barcelona also seemed interested in signing me. It would have been a dream because I am a Barcelona fan, but things went differently.”

The France midfielder reveals that Roberto De Zerbi persuaded him to move to Sassuolo.

“I must admit that I didn’t know much about the club. The coach called me to explain that his idea of football was the same as mine.”

Lopez played 13 games with France at a U21 level and now dreams of making his senior debut with Les Blues.

“The team is full of champions, but I’d like to prove that I am up to the task.”
