Former Milan and Sampdoria striker Maxi Lopez is part of a consortium trying to buy English club Birmingham City, according to the latest reports from Argentina.

The centre-forward has only recently retired at the age of 38 after completing the season in Italy’s Serie C with Sambenedettese.

According to TyC Sport and Calcio e Finanza, Maxi Lopez is part of the group of investors making a bid to purchase Birmingham City along with businessman Christian Codoma.

The club is currently in the Championship, but hoping for promotion to the Premier League.

The current owner is Paul Suen and Birmingham Sports Holdings Limited, but the report suggests €50m would be sufficient for a takeover.

Maxi Lopez spent most of his playing career in Italy with Catania, Milan, Sampdoria, Chievo, Torino, Udinese, Crotone and Sambenedettese.

He is also famous as the ex-husband of Wanda Nara, who left him for his then-Sampdoria teammate Mauro Icardi.
