Stefano Mauri warned Lazio “must reach the Champions League at all costs” ahead of their Napoli showdown.

Today’s 2-1 defeat to Roma means they must get at least a point at the Stadio San Paolo on Sunday night.

If they lose, Napoli will catch them in third place and go in front thanks to a superior head-to-head record.

“We deserved something more against Juventus in the Coppa Italia and the same is true here,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

The captain was sporting an impressive black eye in his post-match interviews.

“I got a knock from Daniele De Rossi, but it was accidental. These things happen, it’s not an issue.

“The game went badly today and it will not be easy, but we have one more round left and have performed at a very high level throughout the campaign.

“We deserve to be in the Champions League and must get the result against Napoli at all costs.”

A draw here would’ve been enough to rule Napoli out, but Lazio attacked more than the Giallorossi.

“We said all week that we wanted to get second place, as the preliminary round is tough, but now we are in this position we’ve got to get third.

“It’s a shame, as we played so well and allowed little to Roma, who scored only on the counter and from a set play.

“We should’ve done better in some tactical situations, such as finding space between the lines, as Roma defended very deep.”
