The 35-year-old attacking midfielder was out of contract on June 30, and it appears he has not been offered an extension by the capital club.

“In my heart, I always have been, I am, and I always will be captain of my beloved Lazio,” Mauri wrote on his official Facebook page.

“I have always had a great relationship with President [Claudio] Lotito. I have never, I repeat never, had contractual problems, let alone money problems.

“All it ever took was a handshake. Over the last few days I’ve spoken several times with the President, and by mutual agreement we decided to end our professional relationship here, after almost 10 wonderful years, and say goodbye with smiles and a lot of tears.

“I’ll miss everything. I’ll miss my armband, my shirt, my locker and Formello. I’ll miss my teammates, who I’ve captained for so many years with pride.

“I will miss all the people who for so many years have been part of my daily life, and I’ll never forget them.

“I’ll miss the great fans, and their passion, the best in the world. Thank you so much for your support, you made me smile, even when I wanted to cry.

“The Aquile will always stay in my heart, I will never stop being one of you. Usually, time heals all wounds, even the deepest ones, and I hope it’s the same for me.

“This is a ‘see you later’, not a ‘goodbye’. With honour, faith and pride, your captain, Stefano Mauri.

“Forza Lazio, always!”
