The lawyer of Lazio midfielder Stefano Mauri has denied his client’s involvement in a new Calcioscommesse investigation.

The former Italy international was suspended for six months in August 2013 for failing to report match-fixing after an investigation on two games.

Now La Repubblica reports that the Lazio captain is being investigated by prosecutors after computer records showed suspicious conversation between a ‘stefano160268’ and a friend of Alessandro Zamperini, who received a two-year ban for his part in the scandal.

However, the player’s lawyer has issued a statement slamming the reports.

“We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – we gave the judiciary everything we had,” Amilcare Buceti told lalaziosiamonoi.it.

“Stefano Mauri is in no way connected to this leaked information about a ‘stefano’ followed by a number, because obviously the number does not correspond to Stefano Mauri.

“He has nothing to do with this story. He never spoke to this man. He never encrypted anything, he never had a dialogue with, wrote to, phoned or was connected to any of these individuals.

“Therefore I repeat for the umpteenth time, as the investigation will inevitably show, Stefano Mauri has nothing to do with this business or with the communications which are printed in the newspapers today.”

According to la Repubblica, prosecutors have used records from 57 smart phones and computers seized in the first round of Calcioscommesse investigations to identify a series of conversations between ‘stefano160268’ and Roberto Palmieri, who the newspaper says is a friend of Alessandro Zamperini.

Palmieri is accused of using his relationship with some of the players, and in particular Stefano Mauri, to fix a game between Lecce and Lazio in 2011. The match ended in a 4-2 Lazio win, a game in which Mauri played.

Two days prior to the game, there was a long conversation between ‘stefano160268’ and Palmieri.

“Get ready for tonight, Bet365 with two or three thousand on the account,” La Repubblica quotes Palmieri as saying.

“The Russians, who you know, will set up an account there on my behalf. Log on once the account has been created abroad. It’s not a problem to log on to the account, only to create the account, do you understand?

“As soon as you give the ok, I’ll bet on over 4.5 goals…”

The two later allegedly discuss another game, in which a supposed bet evidently went wrong, Palmieri saying: “If you had listened to me you could have bathed in Cristal.”

Prosecutors are now trying to establish the identity of ‘stefano160268’. If the 160268 were to refer to a date of birth, this would exclude Mauri.

However, prosecutors believe that the many coincidences – Palmieri, the date of the game and the fact there were over 4.5 goals – implicates Mauri, and have already started the process of identifying the IP address.
