In turn, Public Prosecutor Stefano Palazzi had appealed to have the charge transformed to the more serious accusation of sporting fraud.
The Federal Court of Appeal gave its verdict this evening, confirming Mauri’s guilt of failing to report a potential fix to the authorities and extending the ban to nine months.
“This sentence is incomprehensible, out of proportion and unfair,” said Mauri’s lawyer Amilcare Buceti.
“Even six months was harsh in the circumstances. They did not take into account any of the objective evidence. Any verdict that suspends our client is a defeat.
“I repeat, there was no evidence leading to guilt. We will block the sentence with an appeal to the TNAS. Mauri did not take part in any manipulation of a sporting event. Stefano energetically contested the hypothesis of failing to alert authorities.”
