The player had risked a ban of four years if he had been found guilty of sporting fraud, but the Disciplinary Commission instead opted for the lesser charge of failing to report a potential fix to the authorities.

“Obviously it’s not over,” head of communications Stefano De Martino told Lazio Style Radio.

“We take note of the verdict and await further steps from the public prosecutor Stefano Palazzi.

“As you saw from his statement, Mauri is clearly bitter about the situation. We’ll see from Monday what the next step will be.”

Not only will Mauri appeal against what he called “injustice,” but prosecutor Palazzi is also likely to lodge his own appeal in order to push through the original charge of sporting fraud.

If Mauri had been found guilty of sporting fraud, then Lazio would’ve started the Serie A season with a points penalty.
