“It’s a difficult challenge that we are pleased to be facing,” Mattioli told Sport Mediaset.
“The lads know the kind of match we need to play, as we are up against many champions, but we won’t go to San Siro already beaten. We’ll give it our all to cause them problems.”
This is Spal’s first Serie A season in 49 years, having climbed back from bankruptcy in 2012.
“The town of Ferrara is experiencing this whole situation with great enthusiasm. The last few years have been wonderful, going from Serie C2 to Serie A.
“The team we have now is competitive to stay in the top flight. We know that in order to achieve safety, we must have a very strong home record and get most of our points there, but the principle idea is to fight it out everywhere.
“We have a very good Coach and a group of players who work well together, so the objective is within reach.”
Marco Borriello scored on his Spal debut, a 3-2 victory over Udinese, after his transfer from Cagliari.
“We were seeking an important striker and this opportunity arose that we took straight away. I’m happy because Borriello is a great professional and a great guy.”
