“I only played at Inter for four years, but it was a special time for me. My mentality has always been to win and that’s how I came to Inter: when I arrived, I thought we had to do everything to win, not just on the field, but in our mentality.
“I always told my teammates that we had to play to win and in 1989 we did a great job with Giovanni Trapattoni and the fans. We broke records in that season because everything worked perfectly.
“Serie A was the best league in the world at that time with champions like Ruud Gullit and Diego Maradona, Antonio Careca and Marco van Basten.”
Matthaus also explained why he wore the Number 10 jersey at San Siro.
“The Number 10 is a symbol, especially in Italy. I was happy to wear that jersey, even if I wasn’t exactly a 10, but Trapattoni told me I was important for the team and that’s why I had to wear 10.”
