Speaking to Sky Italia, Matri said: "The world of football is made of things like these. I consider the four years that I spent at Cagliari to be a fundamental step in my development as a footballer and as a man.

"To say that I was very happy in Sardinia would be reductive even if I ask for understanding from a professional point of view.

"My thanks go above all to the President, to my teammates, the directors, the technical staff and the club in general.

"I would like to give a special salute to the fans of Sardinia who have always supported and included me even in moments of difficulties.

"I wish Cagliari the best of success for the current season and for years to come, hoping that all their dreams, the new stadium included, can come true as soon as possible.

"I am linked to Cagliari by indelible memories, above all my first goal in Serie A at the San Paolo."
