Italy and Inter legend Marco Materazzi sees a similarity between Morocco and the Azzurri in 2006 but believes Kylian Mbappé ‘can kill you’ in one vs. one situations while Leo Messi deserves to win the World Cup.
The former Italian centre-back spoke about the World Cup in an interview with La Gazzetta Dello Sport.
Materazzi played a key role in Italy’s World Cup win in 2006, scoring two goals, including one in the Final against France when he was also involved in a certain incident with Zizou Zidane, which you may remember.
Les Blues meet Morocco tonight, hoping to reach Argentina in the Final. What’s the scariest thing about Didier Deschamps’ team?
“Their strength. They have everything: technique and physical strength, like in 2006,” said Materazzi.
“One must try to limit them, resist and try to make the most of those moments where they can concede something.
“Deschamps is a humble coach, he doesn’t care about playing well. He wants to win. And in fact, he won in Russia in 2018. Morocco have an extraordinary example on the pitch. Amrabat covers every pass and he is very useful defensively. They [Morocco] must follow him.”
So, how could the Moroccans stop Mbappé?
“Temporise his action, Mbappé can kill you in one vs. one. Contrary to Mbappé, one always knows where Giroud is, but he scores goals too and is good at making the most of every situation and detail.”
Morocco have only conceded once in Qatar through an own goal, which is something they have in common with the Azzurri in 2006.
“I remember Zaccardo’s unfortunate own goal against the USA and Italy’s defensive performances,” said Materazzi.
“You feel stronger after every game without conceding and continuing to do the same becomes a challenge.”
Italy conceded just two goals in 2006, Zaccardo’s own goal and Zidane’s penalty kick in the Final.
Who will Materazzi support today?
“Morocco, but I think they are the weakest [remaining in the competition]. I hope Argentina win [the World Cup] and I’d be happy for Messi. He has delighted football for years and he’d deserve it.”
Last but not least, Materazzi named the best centre-backs he’s witnessed at the World Cup: “Gvardiol, Thiago Silva and Marquinhos.”
