Marco Materazzi urged his ex-Inter teammate Lucio to retire and remembered when he infuriated Jose Mourinho.

The former defender spoke at a Nike event and told journalists he was surprised to see Lucio still playing for Palmeiras at 35.

“You have to know when to stop, as there’s no point pushing on,” said Materazzi.

“I don’t know what Lucio is trying to do, as he isn’t someone who talks much, but if you don’t choose the right moment to retire then things go badly.”

After terminating his contract with Inter early in July 2012, Lucio joined Juventus, though after six months he ended that deal too in order to join Sao Paulo.

According to Materazzi, the Brazilian didn’t exactly impress him even when winning the Treble in 2010.

“I remember in the 2010 Champions League Final he ran out of defence with the ball to feet. Mourinho told him: ‘Do that again and I’ll kill you!’”
