Treble-winner Marco Materazzi believes Inter can repeat the coup of 2010 when they eliminated Chelsea, doing the same to favourites Liverpool. ‘We were the ones who qualified!’

The first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 tie kicks off at San Siro on Wednesday at 20.00 GMT.

It is the first time Inter have played a knockout round in this tournament in a decade.

Materazzi was in defence for that team and spoke to the Matchday Programme about the parallels between this campaign and the 2010 Treble under Jose Mourinho.

“Playing with the Inter jersey in the Champions League is the best thing, as San Siro transforms in games of this calibre,” said Matrix.

“We really need that atmosphere! It’ll be fundamental not to show weakness in the first leg, because Liverpool are deadly on the counter-attack.”

Away goals are no longer worth double if the overall aggregate score is level, as UEFA changed the rules this season.

“Liverpool are perhaps the toughest opponents Inter could’ve drawn, but I do not forget what happened against Chelsea in the Round of 16 in 2010.

“I remember we faced them in a pre-season friendly in Pasadena and when we were drawn against them, I thought, how can we beat this lot? They seemed to be on another level.

“However, we were the ones who then qualified! It’s not easy, but if it’s your day, it can be a fundamental push for the rest of the season.”

Inter had won the first leg 2-1 at San Siro, then conquered Stamford Bridge 1-0 thanks to a Samuel Eto’o goal, while Didier Drogba saw red late on.

  1. FI ARE YOU SURE “It is the first time Inter have played a knockout round in this tournament since winning the competition, and the Treble, under Jose Mourinho in 2010.”

What about the 1/16 &1/8 of 2011??? Strange

  2. I would not rule out Inter doing the job even though they are without Barella. I expect Liverpool to win over two legs, but they are the only Italian club that fights until the end. If this were Rube, I would expect nothing other then a total humiliation like Bayern vs Barca a couple of seasons ago.

  3. @Susy: Please do your homework or stick to AC Milan articles, you are making this entire editorial team at Football Italia look bad by writing such nonsense.
