Former Inter defender Marco Materazzi believes his old side can ‘compete for the Scudetto’ this season.

The Nerazzurri have invested heavily in the squad this summer, with Ivan Perisic and Ezequiel Lavezzi still being targeted before the end of the transfer window.

“I think Inter have to compete for the Scudetto,” Materazzi insisted, speaking to Corriere Spione.

“When you have a Coach like [Roberto] Mancini and players like [Stevan] Jovetic, Miranda, [Jeison] Murillo, [Geoffrey] Kondogbia and [Mauro] Icardi you can’t do anything but aim for the Scudetto.

“They’ve spent a lot this summer, although now there are good teams like Roma, Inter and Milan under Mihajlovic have also done well.

“That said, Juventus – who have had to rejuvenate their squad after losing the Champions League final – are always the team to beat.

“I expect a lot from Roma right up until the end, they’ve added quality, experienced players.

Fiorentina beat Chelsea and Barcelona in friendlies, but the 2-0 win over Milan shows that [Coach] Paulo Sousa has been able to give consistency to the summer results.”

Materazzi also spoke in defence of Beneamata captain Andrea Ranocchia, and believes he can be useful for Italy.

“I think Ranocchia might come in handy for [Antonio] Conte’s national team, because he knows that the CT wants and the CT knows what he can do.

“He’s at a time when you’re beginning to expect more from him in terms of character, especially with a Coach like Conte.

“He has to express his qualities, although I know there are some at Inter who don’t think like me. But he has to keep going on his own path, the results will come.

“I won [my first Scudetto] at 34, so there’s always time.”
