Marco Materazzi wants to see Mauro Icardi “lift a few trophies with Inter”, and has sympathy for Gianluigi Buffon.
The former Nerazzurri defender was at a Nike exhibition today which showcased iconic shirts and he took the time to speak to Sky.
“A favourite for the Champions League places? Hopefully Inter,” Materazzi said.
“It would be an important step, but you can’t take anything away from what Lazio are doing, like yesterday against a great Fiorentina.

“And don’t remind me that on the last day it’ll be Lazio-Inter, an awful day…”
The last comment was in reference to May 5 2002, when Materazzi’s Inter blew their Scudetto chances with a 4-2 loss to the Aquile, allowing Juventus to take the title.
The former centre-back was then asked about the Beneamata’s current captain, Mauro Icardi.
“I can only hope that he will lift a few trophies with Inter. For what he’s done he deserves only to be praised and followed. I see him like [Hernan] Crespo, but time moves quickly and you can’t make comparisons.”
Perhaps the most famous moment of Matrix’s career was being headbutted by Zinedine Zidane in the World Cup final, did he see any similarities between that and Gigi Buffon’s Real Madrid meltdown?
“It can happen,” Materazzi shrugged.
“When I next see him I’ll ask if he’d do it again… I’ve been wrong a lot of times, we’re human and it’s important to understand that.
“Let’s just say I’d have liked to see what I’d have done if someone had taken that from me like they did with Gigi.
“Under the shirt there’s a heart beating and blood flowing, these things can happen.”
