Atalanta defender Andrea Masiello reveals he injured himself during the extraordinary goal-line clearance against Napoli. “It was worth it.”

The hosts were 1-0 up and thought they were about to double their lead when Arkadiusz Milik dinked the finish over goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini.

Even when Masiello sprinted back to hook it away, everyone thought it had crossed over, but goal-line technology confirmed the centimetres keeping it in play.

“When I saw Milik one-on-one with the goalkeeper, my only thought was to get back there,” Masiello told Sky Sport Italia.

“I believed, I never gave up and I felt extra responsibility, as I was probably the last man keeping him onside, so I had to make up for it.

“Our credo is let nothing go, and I gave every last drop of energy to get there. I hurt my ankle and it’s really sore, but it was worth it.”

The eventual 2-1 victory put Atalanta level on points with fourth-placed Milan, but behind due to an inferior head-to-head record.

“I really didn’t expect us to be this high up the table. We just told ourselves at the start of the season that we’d always play to win. We really believe in the Champions League, but want to go all the way in the Coppa Italia too.”
