FIFA agent Bernardo Brovarone says Javier Mascherano was ‘certain’ to leave Barcelona before the arrival of Luis Enrique.

The Argentine is a summer transfer target for Napoli, whose Coach Rafa Benitez worked with the player while the duo were at Liverpool.

However, new Barca Coach Enrique wants the 29-year-old to remain at Camp Nou and sees him as part of his plans for the new season. Talks have since reopened between player and club over a renewal, with Mascherano said to be undecided on where his future lies.

Speaking to Radio Crc today, Brovarone confirmed that the player’s representative Walter Tamer is still in the Catalan capital trying to get to the bottom of the situation.

“Luis Enrique has put everything back up for discussion,” he said. “His contract is not lavish, he earns €3.2m a season.

“The two parties [Barca and Mascherano] are talking. Because of what Enrique wants, discussions have reopened. Some things still need to be resolved and when there are figures involved there is always a risk.

“Barcelona are obliged to prolong his contract but the player doesn’t seem to agree, so the situation could go on for a while.

“Mascherano’s goodbye was certain before Luis Enrique’s arrival. Then, discussion reopened on a subject that was already closed.

“Tamer went to Barcelona to find out what is going on and today, he remains there.”
