New Empoli Coach Giovanni Martusciello admits “I never thought I’d start by Coaching in Serie A”.
The former player had been assistant with the Tuscan club for a long time, including under Maurizio Sarri and Marco Giampaolo.
“Today I’m extremely excited and proud,” Martusciello told the assembled media in his introductory Press conference.
“It’s a role I’ve never seen from this perspective. When I was asked ‘do you want to Coach Empoli?’ I immediately blurted out my answer.

“I’ve completely changed my way of thinking. Inside I’m absorbing this ‘yes’ that I gave. I’ve always taken risks, even as a player, and I’ll have a lot of difficulties to overcome.
“I’ll give what I’ve got, that’s all I can promise. I never thought I’d start Coaching in Serie A, I’ve been given this opportunity and I’ll try to take it in the best way.
“I’ve taken a big risk, but I didn’t do it unconsciously.”
Martusciello was then asked what he had learned from his two immediate predecessors.
“I thank Sarri, Giampaolo and their collaborators. have learned a lot from Calzona, Sinatti and Bonomi and many others. I tried to be a sponge, to absorb every subtlety of their work.
“I’ll try not to copy Sarri and Giampaolo, but to apply my own knowledge. Empoli will be fighting to avoid relegation, and to do that we have to propose our game, not suffer.
“Sarri is very volcanic, Giampaolo is more balanced. They’re both very intelligent, with a great desire to teach. They gave me a lot of help on a technical and tactical level.
“Sarri was one thing, Giampaolo was another and Martusciello will be another still. I won’t copy anyone.”
