An emotional Lautaro Martinez was happy with Argentina’s ‘good win’ over Uruguay, revealing his family was present at the stadium. ‘I thought of all the sacrifices they made for me’.
The 24-year-old Inter striker was moved after the 3-0 win against Uruguay, as Argentina continued their path towards the World Cup in Qatar next year.
He explained the great emotions he experienced after the final whistle and pointed at the Copa America triumph this summer as the inspiration to give the Albiceleste ‘strength to continue on our path’.
The attacker received a standing ovation when he was replaced by Joaquin Correa in the second half and struggled to hold the tears back on the bench.
“It was a good win,” Lautaro told TV Publica. “Copa America has given us the strength to continue on our path: that of patience, play, of wanting to be protagonists.
“I believe we are demonstrating it on the pitch. Despite Uruguay being a strong opponent, I feel we played the game we wanted and secured the three points that allow us to make a difference in qualifying for the World Cup.
“I’m happy because my family was present at the stadium, and this excited me. I thought of the sacrifices they made for me when I was younger, and they have always accompanied me in every stage of my life. I will always thank them.”
Martinez, capped 31 times by Argentina, scored his 15th goal with the national team and continues the great start to the new season.
He was one of the protagonists at the Copa America too, with three goals in six games in the competition, and has started Serie A 2021-22 with five goals in six appearances.
