Belgium CT Roberto Martinez praised the ‘incredible personality’ shown by his players in the 3-1 win over Wales. ‘Romelu Lukaku continued to defend’.
The Inter forward Lukaku scored the last goal of the match from the penalty spot against Wales at Den Dreef Stadion in Belgium and Martinez was happy with his contributions in the comeback win in the World Cup qualifiers.
“We knew it was going to be a difficult game. The moment we conceded the first goal I thought Wales had started better than us,” Martinez said at a press conference. “They were approaching the match in the right way.
“At that point we therefore had two choices: either to accept it and lose or to show personality and courage to overturn everything.
“And my team did the latter, we never accepted defeat. I was really impressed by the incredible personality that my players put on the pitch.
“Lukaku continued to defend, [Kevin] de Bruyne took the command, [Youri] Tielemans and [Leander] Dendoncker covered their ground, the defence was calm, [Thibaut] Courtois made good choices.
“It wasn’t our best performance, but the points claimed are important.”
Belgium now prepare for an away game against Czech Republic on Saturday and then another home game against Belarus on March 30.
