The striker is expected to sign for the Nerazzurri in the summer, but so far no deal has been announced and the player himself has stated that nothing has been signed.

“Playing in Europe is my objective,” Martinez told AS Argentina.

“It would be nice to grow and keep learning. When I got offers in the past I preferred to stay and keep learning.

“I kept to what I promised, I renewed my contract and I want to win the Copa Libertadores.

“After that we’ll see, I like the Spanish and Italian leagues and I know I’d fit well there, I like them a lot.”

Martinez was also asked if he dreams of being called-up for the World Cup.

“I won’t lie to you, I hope so. I'm waiting for the call, but I work mainly to win the games with my team, then it will be up to the Coach [Jorge Sampaoli] to make a decision.

“Being called up would mean a lot to me, I did some sessions with the senior team and I loved it.

“I couldn’t meet [Lionel] Messi because he was in Barcelona, now I’m working to reach my objectives and one of them is to be called-up for the national team.

“I’ve said several times that if I played with Messi I’d get sick of scoring goals, because he’s the best in the world and gives wonderful assists.

“I would thank Messi for everything he represents for our football, for Argentinians, that’s the first thing I would do if I had the chance to meet him.

“I dream of playing with Messi, but first I have to keep improving with my club.

“Who inspires me? Messi, because he’s great. I also watch Gonzalo Higuain, I love his style of play and his movement. Then I watch Kun Aguero because he has great power.

“I try to learn from everyone.”
