Marseille and Sassuolo tug of war for Doig

Verona full-back Josh Doig is reportedly frustrated at being caught in a tug-of-war between Olympique Marseille and Sassuolo.

It had been widely believed that a deal was imminent for his move to France in the January transfer window, at a cost of €6m including bonuses.

He was in the starting XI for today’s 2-1 win over Empoli and many expected it to be his final appearance for the club.

However, this evening Sportitalia, Sky Sport Italia and Footmercato are all reporting the same version of events.

Specifically, they claim that Doig is determined to join Olympique Marseille, whereas Verona are leaning towards a sale to fellow Serie A club Sassuolo, who made a higher offer.

Now Marseille are believed to be so frustrated that they warned Verona if a deal is not done by tomorrow morning, they will turn to other targets.

It is a tense situation for the 21-year-old Scottish talent, who has made 12 Serie A appearances this season and two in the Coppa Italia.

He was purchased from Hibernian in the summer of 2022 for €3.6m and is under contract with Verona until June 2026.
