Inter director Beppe Marotta is optimistic that Milan Skriniar will extend his stay at the Stadio Meazza but warns that not all players with a deal expiring in June will be offered a new contract.

Marotta was one of the guests of Italian journalist Marco Bellinazzo who presented his latest book in Milan on Wednesday.

The Nerazzurri are in talks to extend with Milan Skriniar, whose current deal runs out in June 2023.

Stefan de Vrij, Roberto Gagliardini, Edin Dzeko, Matteo Darmian, Danilo D’Ambrosio, Samir Handanovic and Alex Cordaz also see their contracts expire in June.

“I think that a team’s success does not depend on a single player. We have a strong bond with Milan [Skriniar], he is a great professional,” Marotta said, as quoted by Calciomercato.com.

“There are other players with a contract expiring, and they’d all deserve to be confirmed, but the business logic does not allow us to do so. I am optimistic that Skriniar will sign a new contract.”

Inter also loaned Romelu Lukaku, Kristjan Asllani, Raoul Bellanova and Francesco Acerbi last summer and it remains to be seen if the Serie A giants will make their moves permanent in 2023.

Marotta also spoke about the Super League, which was launched by 12 elite European clubs in 2021, including Inter.

However, the Nerazzurri withdrew with Milan and Atletico Madrid and Premier League clubs, so Juve, Barcelona and Real Madrid are the only clubs still formally involved in the project.

“It [the Super League] was just a warning from clubs, in this case, those still involved, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus representing Italy,” said Marotta.

“It’s not easy to be competitive with the Premier League, which continues to generate income, contrary to other models that are going backwards, except from the German one. As you all know, Audi and Adidas are Bayern’s partners. It’s all linked to the concept of entertainment, something worthy of a ticket.

“There are faithful fans who would follow the team also in the third division and others who care about entertainment. We must pursue sustainability which is also represented by necessary foreign investments.

“Italy used to be the paradise of football, today, there are more competitive leagues that can offer more money, so we must be able to renew when a player has two years left in his contract or sell.”
