Icardi returned to training this week for the first time since he was stripped of his captaincy on February 13, yet Spalletti announced he would not even be in the squad.

It was a surprise to Paolo Nicoletti, the lawyer who has been acting as intermediary between Inter and Icardi to negotiate a return to training.

“I admire Nicoletti a great deal for his professionalism, but you cannot expect a lawyer to know who is called up to a match before anyone else. That’s fantasy football,” CEO Marotta told Sky Sport Italia.

“Icardi is being brought back in gradually. It’s a very difficult role, but the Coach has the right to choose his collaborators, the players to put on the field and the players to call up for every match.

“Nobody can complain about Spalletti, as he is doing what is best for Inter.”
