The 38-year-old stopper has played for the Bianconeri since signing from Parma in 2001, and the impact caused by his future absence for club and country simply cannot be overestimated.

“The heir to Buffon? The biggest problem is to replace the best goalkeeper in football history.

“We will try to get closer to finding a replacement on the same level. His desire, in any case, is to continue.”

The Old Lady supremo continued, and was also keen to quash any rumours of discontent from striker Mario Mandzukic.

“This is the last time I will speak on the alledged grievances of Mandzukic and the explosion of [Marko] Pjaca.”

“There will be space for all the players this season, they must have patience.

“The most important work of Pjaca has not been on Sundays but during the week.

“Since he has arrived, he has fit right in, he has improved so much. His moment will come.”
