Beppe Marotta says while ‘I’ve never sacked a Coach in my 22 years as a Serie A director’, the Champions League is ‘decisive’ for Inter boss Luciano Spalletti.

Three straight defeats and elimination from both the Champions League and Coppa Italia have left Spalletti’s position increasingly unsafe, and Marotta was cryptic in his assessment of the former Roma boss.

“Spalletti is confirmed. We can’t talk about his job being at risk,” he told Sport Mediaset.

“In my 22 years as a Serie A director at three clubs like Atalanta, Sampdoria and Juventus, I’ve never sacked a Coach.

“You need special conditions to sack a Coach and here those conditions don’t exist. Spalletti will stay with us.

“Champions League decisive for his future? There are some objectives that must be achieved. After that we’ll make our considerations.

“The culture of winning must be improved here. We come out of this crisis, trying to elevate this concept.

“We’re all under review, stock is taken every week. Icardi? There’s no reason to think he could be affected by this situation, among other things taken care of by his wife Wanda.

“It’s not the cause. It’s his involution.”
