“I think that the real values of a team emerge over time and the Scudetto will be won by the best side, but it’s premature to discuss that now,” Marotta told Mediaset Premium.

“The difficult start is certainly affecting us and we have to work on motivation even more than tactical issues. We want to leave alibis aside, but certainly the calendar is packed and with so many injuries we’re never able to field the same XI.

“The Coach is put in a difficult position and cannot choose his favoured line-up.”

Tonight there is a huge test at the Stadio San Paolo.

“Whether it’s Napoli, Carpi or Empoli, there’s no difference,” insisted Marotta. “We need a good performance, but above all we need to pick up points.

“We must stay calm, as we have great faith in the Coach and the squad we’ve put together. There are so many points still up for grabs. I’ve been in football a long time and know a comeback is possible.

“The difference this season is we have 10 new players in a 24-man squad. It takes time to gel, to let them understand the tactical requirements.

“We also lost character with champions like Carlos Tevez and Andrea Pirlo. We replaced them with suitable players, but certainly in that sense we’re missing something.

“The strength of every squad is to be versatile, so players can adapt to any system. This year the Coach has many options at his disposal.”
