Juventus director Beppe Marotta explains how they dealt with Alessandro Del Piero differently to Roma with Francesco Totti.

There was chaos today when Totti was sent home from the training camp ahead of the Serie A game with Palermo following comments critical of Coach Luciano Spalletti and the club.

The problem appears to be that Roma won’t offer a contract extension at the end of the season, as he turns 40 in September, but haven’t confirmed that to the captain.

“It is evident that Roma are now having to deal with a truly embarrassing situation,” Marotta told Rai Sport.

“I can only say what happened to us with Del Piero, who remains an icon of Juventus, an icon of football and a legend at our club.

“When his contract expired, we renewed it for one more season and the President was very clear in the Shareholder’s Meeting in October, so a few months later, on the situation.

“He quite rightly praised the history of this great champion, who contributed to the great success of our club, and at the same time announced it would be his final year.

“This is how we closed that rapport in the best possible way, with a Scudetto under new Coach Antonio Conte and a great salute from Del Piero to the fans.

“We were very clear and explicit. I think at this point it’s right to remind people of what is written on the badge of Danish club Brondby: Supra Societatem Nemo. It means There is nothing above the club.”
