Inter President Beppe Marotta insists they ‘never progressed’ in talks for Albert Gudmundsson of Genoa, who joined Fiorentina, and names his top Scudetto contenders.

Both this game and Parma-Fiorentina kick off at 17.30 UK time (16.30 GMT).

You can follow all the build-up and action as it happens from these matches, MilanTorino and Empoli-Monza on the LIVEBLOG.

The Nerazzurri begin the defence of their title at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, also commonly known as Marassi.

Fiorentina officially signed Gudmundsson yesterday and had been linked with Inter for months, so did they feel that they missed out on the Iceland international?

“In all honesty, that was more of a media situation. We looked into it, but never went further really because we have players who can give us guarantees. It never progressed beyond that,” Marotta told DAZN.

Marotta outlines Inter ideas

Their window is not over yet, as they are also seeking a defender to come in and it will be a younger figure similar to Yann Bisseck, who starts today.

“We are looking for a Bisseck-style player, both in terms of his characteristics, but also his age and value. We are evaluating a very valid young prospect, we’re working on it and know there are still 15 days left in the transfer window.

“The squad is missing a few players today, but is still a respectable team and we face this season fully aware we have a competitive group.

“We outlined the profile of the player we are looking for.”

Inter won the Scudetto last season, but who does Marotta see as their main rivals for the title this time around?

Juventus and Napoli are works in progress, Milan are perhaps more solidified and can be accredited to challenge. The transfer market is not over yet, so it is too early to say, but these usual teams, and I would add Atalanta and Roma too, are the ones who will fight for the Scudetto.”
