The Nerazzurri ended a nine-year Juventus hegemony in Serie A by securing the Serie A title with four rounds to spare under coach Antonio Conte.

Speaking to TG3, he was asked if the sacking of Luciano Spalletti and decision to sell Mauro Icardi represented the turning point for Inter?

“When I arrived, after getting to know everyone, I discussed a new project with the club owners. We discussed it both with Piero Ausilio and the owners, drawing up a programme with new choices and a new structure, seeing as it was right to make changes.

“Conte was the architect behind the march towards the Scudetto, along with the players who followed his instructions and the club that supported him in every way.

“All together, we had this unexpected joy for a Scudetto that arrived four games early, so that too is a small record we are proud of.”

Inter were able to focus exclusively on Serie A after their Champions League exit in the group phase, but Marotta insists there are other issues at play.

“It’s not just a gap for Inter, but for all the Italian clubs in Europe. It’s no coincidence that this season the Champions League Final is between two English clubs, with Manchester United in the Europa League Final.

“We are far from the performance levels of the 2000s that saw Italians lead the way, so we have to work, but also completely revamp the existing business model.

“COVID has cut deep into a business that was already difficult to sustain in normal times. Our first objective is to cut costs, therefore also wages, which make a big impact on the way a club is run, and then try to make the most of our resources.”

Marotta hinted that fans should not expect a strong transfer strategy this summer.

“I say on behalf of myself and the club that we will give our all to achieve new objectives. The equation that those who spend the most money end up winning is not always true.”
